Seven years after the release of their critically-acclaimed album The Outcasts Will Make a Strong Nation, The Wells return to recording in the form of a digital single, "Gem of Egypt" backed with "Leave the Century". Both recordings are the result of a recent studio session for a new Wells album. In "Gem of Egypt," a man reflects on his complicated feelings about working on one of the largest strip-mining machines ever built—the GEM of Egypt, an earth-mover active in southeast Ohio until the late 1980s. The more ambiguous "Leave the Century" pieces together fragments of history and bitterness, impossible outrun.
 
The Wells formed in the fall of 2002 at Victorian's Midnight Café in Columbus, Ohio. Soon after, the Wells released an EP, New Death Valley Blues (out of print), and followed that with The Outcasts Will Make a Strong Nation. Columbus' The Other Paper said "The Wells' willingness to stray from convention is the ace up their sleeve," while the website Americana UK said, "The punk attitude is apparent throughout without ever getting in the way—it is energy, an approach, and a willingness to play around with form."

Although The Wells' frequency of shows and recordings has changed, they continue to work on a new record to be released in 2014. Having recently been proud members of the Singing Moon Records roster, they are happy to find a new home in Mingo Town.
